Our History

The year was 1918, a little Mission was organized in the home of Mrs. Hortense Farley with the women's Mighty Missionary of St. Paul A.M.E. Church. This Mission was called Wayman Chapel. The following year, the Mission purchased property located at 439 Parsons Avenue and was named the Third A.M.E. Church. In the year 1926, under the pastorate of Reverend Turner, the name of the church was changed to Parsons A.M.E. Church.

In 1927, under the leadership of Rev. J.E. Kendall, the church was renamed Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Rev. Kendall's persistent and determined efforts enabled the congregation to purchase property at 387 S. Washington Ave. and there to build an edifice. Bethel worshiped at this address for several years under the watch and care of Bishop R.C. Ransom and Pastors Rev. J. Hodge, Rev. F.B. Mason, Rev. J.W. Arnold Rev. Walker, Rev. Anderson, Rev. C.H. McPherson, Rev. Spearman, and Rev. J. C. Gresham.
